Getting Back on Track

This is sponsored content from BlogHer and the makers of One A Day Multivitamins.

You know what they say: The higher you fly, the farther you fall. And boy, did we fly high this summer. We spread our wings and soared to far-off places like Chicago, New York, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dover, Birmingham and more. After five weeks of driving on the "wrong" side of the road, living out of a suitcase, doting in-laws who did all the laundry in between trips, going to bed late because the sun was shining until nine-thirty in the evening, and trying a new English chocolate bar every day, it's not surprising that coming back home felt like more of a crash-landing than usual (Literally -- the day before we left the UK, Jammy did a spectacular face-plant into the sidewalk after skateboarding without a helmet, which was only further evidence of how far removed we had become from our normal rules and habits). Going home meant going from walking in places like this:
To this:
Getting back to our schooltime routine this year involves quite a bit more than getting used to waking up early, so we're doing a couple of things to help ourselves out: * Take it one small step at a time. We were so far out of our regular routine that changing everything back at once would have been way too much. So we've been doing it gradually. We've traveled to the UK often enough to know that it takes about a week for us to get over our jet lag, so I made sure we arrived in the US two weeks before the start of the schoolyear. I also scheduled a few playdates for the kids because they literally hadn't seen any of their friends the whole summer, and we won't be signing up for too many afterschool activities this fall so the kids aren't too overwhelmed with organized activities. * Write things down After such a long break, tasks seem to be popping up like daisies -- I need to block off calendar dates for school events, sign up to volunteer, sign up for afterschool classes, schedule doctors' appointments and a million other things like the Spring Cleaning I never got around to finishing. Rather than rushing to do the first thing that pops into my mind, I find that making lists really helps me see the big picture and prioritize what needs to be done first. Plus, crossing things off lists is really, really satisfying. * Make it a game I'm taking a cue from Mary Poppins and adding spoonfuls of sugar to ease the painful process of watching the clock. We've turned our morning and evening routine into a game -- every morning the first child to be ready for school gets a point, and every evening there's another point up for grabs to the first child to be ready for bed. We keep track of points on a chart, and at the end of September the child with the most points gets to choose whatever activity they want for a family day. By the way, games aren't just for kids -- thanks to the makers of One-A-Day Multi-vitamins, I've discovered a new online tool (I suspect it's called an "online tool" because we're grownups and all, but it's actually fun like a game) that can help ease you back into a routine and maintain a focused lifestyle. Players can "create" their own Wellness Tree by choosing 3 areas that matter most -- finances, career, health, spirituality, relationships, etc.., there's no wrong answer -- and "grow" their tree by committing to simple daily actions that develop those areas. So whether you've been to the UK, or to hell and back, My Tree is an easy, fun way to help you get back on track! Ashley Metzger on September 21, 2010 at 11:49 AM said...

I write a goal schedule/outline of how I'd like a normal day to go and try it out for a few days and adjust it as I go to make sure it fits well with everyone. I have daily to-do lists as well as weekly ones to make sure I stay on top of things, and my goal list is to help me make sure I'm not getting distracted by the tv or internet and spending quality time with my kids & family.

Getting back into routine is made easier by adjusting in increments. If the kids have been staying up later during the summer, then the week before school starts it is best if they start by going to bed 20 minutes earlier than they have been each day until they are back on their school sleep schedule. It makes for a lot less of a fight than suddenly switching back to their "old" schedule in one day.

Finding and sticking to that daily routine requires some planning. The first thing I need to do at the beginning of the school year is figure out when everything is going to be happening. I plug everything into my calendar and then plan from there.

Ever since my son was 6 weeks old and started sleeping for 11 hours at night, I haven't broken my routine with him. It's adjusted over the past 18 months, but consistency is key! I'm sure with more than 1 child that will change, but right now I do everything and anything I can to keep his schedule consistent - even on vacation. Sleep is the #1 thing I don't compromise on - naptime and bedtime. So important for his sanity as well as mine!

I'm a list person, and I too enjoy crossing items off of lists. I got myself a fancy clipboard (one that has an inside compartment as well), and everything that needs to get done gets written on the sheet of paper on the front, while miscellaneous papers/mail/coupons/whatever that needs to be dealt with goes inside (and is written on the list). I'm becoming more efficient and organized, two big things!

I carry "my brain" (my planner) with me everywhere so all our information is right at hand. I buy a school planner so there is plenty of room to write down all critical information: appointments, shopping lists, whether Daddy has school so I need to pick up the kids, what day is school spirit shirt day, etc. Even if it seems inconsequential, I write it down so we don't forget, and it's all in one convenient place. Of course, if I ever LOSE my brain, we'll be lost ...

Wow, incredible summer. I think consistency is very important. The kids need to know what is expected of them and let them run with it. My girls know what they need to to everyday after school: clean room, homework, reading, and piano practice and then the time is theirs. But, you have to flexible with whatever else is going on, too. My weekly calender is key to keep track of it all.

I make sure my daughter and I do the evening lay-out together and I always ask "Are there any Mommy-papers I need to sign now??" Surprisingly, there usually are and if I wouldn't have asked, she wouldn't have given them to me.

To get my family back in routine we prepare ahead of time whether it be back to school, a crazy weekend or coming back from a family vacation. I take time out each day to pick outfits, prepare dinners in advance and snacks for lunches. I usually plan meals ahead of time and I always make lists and notes on what to remember. It usually takes some time for things to get back to normal but we always settle quite nicely.

Trial and error is the best way I know. I know that it's best to exercise in the morning because then you WILL find time for it, but that racquetball is very bad for me in the morning (my body isn't awake until later - I ached for TWO DAYS after that!!). So now I walk in the mornings and if I want to play racquetball, I do it later in the day.

Keeping the kids on a good schedule helps a lot, too, because things go smoother when everybody knows what they need to do when. Now.... if somebody has any ideas about getting HUSBANDS to learn that their individual needs are NOT more important than everyone else's, I'd love to hear them :-)

Find the routine that works for your family by trial and error. I think there is no other way. Once a schedule is established, stick to it! Habits develop after repeated use. Once you get up at the same time every day (weekends included) for a couple of weeks, it will be so easy. More energy can be found simply by getting up and going to sleep at the same time.

I am not big on routine myself but I do find that some things require it. For those occasions I ease the family into the routine weeks (and sometimes months) before we really need to start so that they become comfortable with it gradually and it doesn't seem like much of a change.

Lim on September 25, 2010 at 7:06 PM said...

As far as finding a good routine, write down what NEEDS to be done, say first thing in the morning. Is there time to do it all? Now put them in an order that makes sense. If you have slopply teeth brushers put getting dressed AFTER brushing teeth.

Now that you have the most important things taken care of, look and see if there are any things that SHOULD be done, like making the bed. Take a look at the list of "needs" and see where it makes the most sense to fit it in.

My best tip is to add new things to your existing routine. If you try a whole new routine it is hard but if you add things at similar times to what you already do you can remember better.

I have to start my kids about 3 weeks early into getting into routine. I started by putting them into bed about 10 the first two nights then 9 the other nights. After about 6 days they were doing great with going to sleep shortly after 9. I would get them up early like they were going to school and have them go through all the motions because they needed to know if they needed more time getting up instead of rushing around. By the time school started they were not tired or anything. they were ready to go.

A routine is good, but something to think about is that, the older you get, the more you get stuck in routines. While you're still young, employ the routines, but don't fall in love with them. Some day it may be harder than you think to be spontaneous.

Don't just make a schedule. Make the schedule fit your family. For example, when my grandson gets home from school (he live with us) he needs to run off some energy. He is allowed to play till dinner. I make sure dinner is ready early enough that he has time to do his homework afterward and then have a little relaxing time before bedtime.

My advice is to get as much done the night before as possible...
I empty, sort and discuss the contents of their book bags right after school as kids are having their afternoon snacks.
Homework done, book bags repacked and ready the night before.
The calmer things are in the morning, the happier everyone will be!
