You know what they say: The higher you fly, the farther you fall. And boy, did we fly high this summer. We spread our wings and soared to far-off places like Chicago, New York, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dover, Birmingham and more. After five weeks of driving on the "wrong" side of the road, living out of a suitcase, doting in-laws who did all the laundry in between trips, going to bed late because the sun was shining until nine-thirty in the evening, and trying a new English chocolate bar every day, it's not surprising that coming back home felt like more of a crash-landing than usual (Literally -- the day before we left the UK, Jammy did a spectacular face-plant into the sidewalk after skateboarding without a helmet, which was only further evidence of how far removed we had become from our normal rules and habits). Going home meant going from walking in places like this:To this:
Getting back to our schooltime routine this year involves quite a bit more than getting used to waking up early, so we're doing a couple of things to help ourselves out: * Take it one small step at a time. We were so far out of our regular routine that changing everything back at once would have been way too much. So we've been doing it gradually. We've traveled to the UK often enough to know that it takes about a week for us to get over our jet lag, so I made sure we arrived in the US two weeks before the start of the schoolyear. I also scheduled a few playdates for the kids because they literally hadn't seen any of their friends the whole summer, and we won't be signing up for too many afterschool activities this fall so the kids aren't too overwhelmed with organized activities. * Write things down After such a long break, tasks seem to be popping up like daisies -- I need to block off calendar dates for school events, sign up to volunteer, sign up for afterschool classes, schedule doctors' appointments and a million other things like the Spring Cleaning I never got around to finishing. Rather than rushing to do the first thing that pops into my mind, I find that making lists really helps me see the big picture and prioritize what needs to be done first. Plus, crossing things off lists is really, really satisfying. * Make it a game I'm taking a cue from Mary Poppins and adding spoonfuls of sugar to ease the painful process of watching the clock. We've turned our morning and evening routine into a game -- every morning the first child to be ready for school gets a point, and every evening there's another point up for grabs to the first child to be ready for bed. We keep track of points on a chart, and at the end of September the child with the most points gets to choose whatever activity they want for a family day. By the way, games aren't just for kids -- thanks to the makers of One-A-Day Multi-vitamins, I've discovered a new online tool (I suspect it's called an "online tool" because we're grownups and all, but it's actually fun like a game) that can help ease you back into a routine and maintain a focused lifestyle. Players can "create" their own Wellness Tree by choosing 3 areas that matter most -- finances, career, health, spirituality, relationships, etc.., there's no wrong answer -- and "grow" their tree by committing to simple daily actions that develop those areas. So whether you've been to the UK, or to hell and back, My Tree is an easy, fun way to help you get back on track! «Oldest ‹Older 401 – 492 of 492 Newer› Newest»If you fall behind for any reason, stay up a little bit late and finish whatever housework is unfinished. That way you can start the next day fresh and stay on track even if you're a little tired for just one day.
I use an oversized calendar that has plenty of space for all the possible activities. As soon as we learn of anything new it goes on the calendar immediately. We can see at a glance if one or two days seem to be overloaded and can try to make adjustments.
Making sure the kids are on their bedtime schedules helps a lot and then we just roll into what comes next. Planning is a big key to staying on top of things

Those weekly Pill/vitamin cases with "M,T,W,TH" and so on, really DO come in handy as a reminder to take your vitamins each day with breakfast before heading out that door!

I think a great way to find a good routine is to sit down and write out what you like, and what's really good for you then compromise. You could do some research on the web and incorporate it into your daily life :D I think the best way to make yourself stick to it is to be realistic and to make sure you enjoy a large portion of it...

Every day is a different routine... however we do eat our dinner as a whole family, that never gets missed!
I use a large-sized calendar on the refrigerator with all the appointments and chores written in it.
I write everything on the calendar

I just have to keep telling myself over and over what needs to be done. Eventually, it becomes habit and routine. I reward myself when things go well to keep me motivated

We pretty much always have the same routine. The girls get up at the same time, get ready and go to school. They come home and know to do homework before anything else. Then we have softball games or practice a few days a week so we do that and then we eat dinner. If we don't have practice or games they get a few minutes of tv. Our days are very preditable. lol thank you!

We have a very strict schedule during the day, Same thing every single day.
My best tip is to have someone who is doing the routine with you. The extra accountability always helps me stay on track!

I write all my appointments on a calendar that hangs on fridge and I make a to do list to check off for everything else.
We have a schedule and I just have to be sure to be very consistant with it. moondreamer1979 at yahoo dot com
We start a routine a few weeks before school starts (getting up earlier, eating dinner earlier, etc) so it makes it easier to get back to a school schedule. My girls know their schedule now and do a great job sticking to it!

Checklists really help me see what's been done, and what needs to be done, very visibly.
I think writing your ideal schedule down helps the most. Then you are very aware of what you should be doing when.
I still haven' found a good daily routine!! LOL
No lists, I keep it all in my head.
I do the same thing every day and run on a schedule. It works best for me. Growing up my Mom would not let me write stuff down but made me remember it so I learned to do that. Wierd, huh?

We have a magnetic chore board and a family calendar posted to keep us all on track. I also plan our meals weekly so I know what to buy when I go to the grocery store. I also make lists to keep me reminded.

Make it fun. If it is fun they you will always want to do it.
I put reminders into my computer's calendar program to help remind me of important events and special things I need to remember to do.
As for establishing a daily routine, I think that when you force yourself to do the same routine each weekday, it takes a lot less effort to do it in the following weeks.
I also have a list in my head of things that need to get done but don't have a deadline - and I try to do one each day - even something as simple as making a phone call I don't want to make counts!

We have a family calendar in the kitchen and part of our daily routine is preparing for the next day at night. After dinner and homeowrk the next thing is making lunches, getting everything ready for the next days activities - backpacks, gym bags, sports equipment, whatever is need in the morning/next day is packed and put by the door so that we aren't rushing in the mornings.

We have a chalkboard in the kitchen. We write down daily chores and things that need to be done. If they're all done at the end of the day then we've done good

I have tried it all and so far the only system that works best for me is Google Calendar. I sync everything and print schedules out once a week for our fridge. Plus, the calendar is sync'ed with my iPhone for reference when we are on the go!

For me, the mom of a large family, I have found that writing down what I need to do, and going over what I need to do the following day, in my mind right before I go to sleep at night, really helps me to remember what I need to do. vidomich(at)yahoo(dot)com
The best way to stick to a routine is to follow the plan everyday.
Don't be afraid to ask for help (from your partner/spouse and kids) in order to help you stick to a good routine. It's really hard for one person to do everything themselves and when you take on too much, that leads to chaos, I think.
My best tip for finding and sticking to a daily routine is ask people who successful in whatever you do for their best routine. That, and keep a detailed daily planner.
We have just kept a routine for long enough now that everyone knows it so it's not hard to keep up. I have an appt book and I take a single sheet of paper and print out a monthly calendar that I put on the fridge with that month's appt, etc so everyone can see what's coming up out of the norm. Thanks so much! pamelashockley(AT)aol(DOT)com

I make lists and try hard to stick to them. There are some days though when life throws a major curve ball and I don't get anything on the list done.
Schedule it as early as possible. If you have kids or a clinging spouse that likes to sleep a little longer, use that time to your advantage.

Thanks for the giveaway...I was taught by my parents to make a daily "to do" check list for the day & week ahead, and have passed this habit along to my kids as a valuable organizational tool which, surprisingly, they have adopted since about third or fourth grade !

I keep a running list on a note pad of things I have to do and cross them off as I do them. I like the note pad because I can take it with me for the outside errands. Of course, when you scratch off one, you end up adding two! Neverending!!!
