You know what they say: The higher you fly, the farther you fall. And boy, did we fly high this summer. We spread our wings and soared to far-off places like Chicago, New York, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dover, Birmingham and more. After five weeks of driving on the "wrong" side of the road, living out of a suitcase, doting in-laws who did all the laundry in between trips, going to bed late because the sun was shining until nine-thirty in the evening, and trying a new English chocolate bar every day, it's not surprising that coming back home felt like more of a crash-landing than usual (Literally -- the day before we left the UK, Jammy did a spectacular face-plant into the sidewalk after skateboarding without a helmet, which was only further evidence of how far removed we had become from our normal rules and habits). Going home meant going from walking in places like this:To this:
Getting back to our schooltime routine this year involves quite a bit more than getting used to waking up early, so we're doing a couple of things to help ourselves out: * Take it one small step at a time. We were so far out of our regular routine that changing everything back at once would have been way too much. So we've been doing it gradually. We've traveled to the UK often enough to know that it takes about a week for us to get over our jet lag, so I made sure we arrived in the US two weeks before the start of the schoolyear. I also scheduled a few playdates for the kids because they literally hadn't seen any of their friends the whole summer, and we won't be signing up for too many afterschool activities this fall so the kids aren't too overwhelmed with organized activities. * Write things down After such a long break, tasks seem to be popping up like daisies -- I need to block off calendar dates for school events, sign up to volunteer, sign up for afterschool classes, schedule doctors' appointments and a million other things like the Spring Cleaning I never got around to finishing. Rather than rushing to do the first thing that pops into my mind, I find that making lists really helps me see the big picture and prioritize what needs to be done first. Plus, crossing things off lists is really, really satisfying. * Make it a game I'm taking a cue from Mary Poppins and adding spoonfuls of sugar to ease the painful process of watching the clock. We've turned our morning and evening routine into a game -- every morning the first child to be ready for school gets a point, and every evening there's another point up for grabs to the first child to be ready for bed. We keep track of points on a chart, and at the end of September the child with the most points gets to choose whatever activity they want for a family day. By the way, games aren't just for kids -- thanks to the makers of One-A-Day Multi-vitamins, I've discovered a new online tool (I suspect it's called an "online tool" because we're grownups and all, but it's actually fun like a game) that can help ease you back into a routine and maintain a focused lifestyle. Players can "create" their own Wellness Tree by choosing 3 areas that matter most -- finances, career, health, spirituality, relationships, etc.., there's no wrong answer -- and "grow" their tree by committing to simple daily actions that develop those areas. So whether you've been to the UK, or to hell and back, My Tree is an easy, fun way to help you get back on track! We set our alarm clock for the same time every day and eat breakfast, take vitamins, get ready for work and/or school/church. To stay organized I write down what is due, use tubs and canisters for small items and food items. It is not hard to stay in a routine unless the times of your job changes, that takes getting used to.

We don't so much keep a daily list, but we do organize our tasks and time with Google calendar.
Each family member can have their own personal calendar/color and still have more colors for the schools, and of course one for the family events. It's so nice to access it from any computer and our phones. Even on the go, we can all keep up with each other.

I have a 3-ring binder that is always within reach. In it, I keep a detailed calendar for the year. I also have a tabbed section for each of my four children. Within each of their tabs, I keep important papers regarding their school schedules, extracurricular activities, medical info, etc. In the front pocket of the binder, I keep papers that need to be addressed right away (ex. field trip permission slips, or other things that need to be turned in to their school etc.) I would seriously be lost without my binder.
My goal is to never get out of routine during the summer. I try to keep everyone at the same bedtimes and wake-up times. First off, let me say that it made my day when you referred to Chioago as a "far away place" - it make the old familiar seem more exotic and interesting!
As for keeping a routine going (if not always exciting!) I find it helps A LOT to keep a journal - even if you just jot down your thoughts and impression, observations and FEELINGS while going about your "routines". Focus on your progress and NEW ideas to pursue. Maybe write a poem or Haiku about your experience. I just find that"ritual" to be very enriching, expressive and expansive.

With 5 sons I have had to struggle over the years to find balance!!
I have learned to assign weekly chores, have the boys get their things ready the night before and double check, I have them sit at the kitchen table while I cook and they do their schoolwork, I always make extras when cooking things like lasagna, or chili so I can freeze and have a "fast food" meal when needed..
I still work on it but have found that the boys understand the need and they actively and usually willingly help!!

other than school/work, the best routine is to not make a routine so you don't get in a rut, do something different every day! - regnod(at)yahoo(d0t)com
I think the hardest part of creating and sticking to a daily routine is when you are first implementing it - getting in the initial habit of it.
So the important thing is to keep sticking with it even when its rather a drag or the kids are protesting, and it wont be long until it becomes a habit.

Write it down and post it. I'm a stickler for keeping to the schedule- although the schedule varies- it's all written down or I'd forget what in the world we/I should do!

Being homeschooled my grandkids don't have to have a real strict routine. But always schoolwork BEFORE play.
We try to do as much as possible the night before. We get their snacks ready, put their clothes out. Most importantly, we get a good night's sleep the night before.
It is important to start this schedule and remain conistent, or else we rush around and forget important things like homework, cell phones, etc.

I've been following the same routine for so many years, I've forgotten how it all came together. I know I would never get anything done if I didn't stick to a routine.

I keep a large calender on the kitchen wall where everything is written in pencil in case it has to be erased. I also provide daily contact telephone numbers, in case anybody has any problems for that day.

I adjust bedtimes before school starts and then give it time to settle in. I start slow with activities becasue getting back to school is an adjustment after the summer. Slow and steady to see what kind of homework is given and what interests the child has. Stick with it and it works. Thanks!
if we dont stick to a routine eveything falls into chaos, the thought of that keeps me straight :0)
For me, the challenge was to get myself healthy and I wanted to start walking five days a week to help me get there.
The only thing that I found that helped me make it a consistent routine, at least at first, was to promise myself a reward when I had finished.
Now of course, while I still don't necessarily like exercise, I do love how it makes my body feel, so that is it's own reward.

To stick to a regular routine, I live by my Blackberry, which I use to program my regular meetings, times for meals and pick-ups from school, etc., to keep me on task and focused from morning to night. I've also started keeping a planner as a back-up so I can be sure to have everyone's agendas with me at all times.
Thanks!

I try to get up around the same time each day, anticipate how much time I'll have to cook and eat daily based on our schedule, and do as much the night before as possible.
It's a must that routines are followed every day here. We have a dry erase board to keep everyones schedule on track, make sure teeth are brushed and kids are in bed every night at the same time (even weekends), and also make sure the kids wake at the same time even on days off of school.
Sorry, just wrote and forgot to leave my email addy. I wrote about anticipating how much time I would have to cook and eat based on our schedule and do as much as possible the night before. Sorry, and please delete the previous comment.

I try to get everything done that I can for the next day the night before.

My best tip for finding and sticking to a daily routine is to begin by waking up at the same time everyday. A routine is completely messed up without this simple rule. Thanks for the contest! codisweepstakes2 (@) gmail(dot)com
Keep it simple and consistent. We have a 17 year old, an almost 4 year old, and a 13 month old. We HAVE to keep a schedule, or things get pretty hairy. We end the evening the same way each night with the kids, and if we switch for some reason, it throws everyone off.
I've got a todo list on a daily basis. I make sure I have all appts, work related items and even work out times on it, so I make sure I get everything done. It helps me feel a lot less stressed.

I don't think I can come up with anything different than what has already been mentioned.
We always write down important events on our calendar and I write down daily lists so I don't forget anything.
It's important to have clocks where you can see them. We have a digital clock with a large face in the bedroom, a couple of anniversary clocks in the living room, and the clock on the stove in the kitchen. The bathoom is the only room without a clock (and I think it needs one, it would just have to be moisture- and heat-proof).
We are a trial and error family. If naps don't work for the girls and they stay up late we skip naps, if they don't seem to be hungry around noon, we have lunch at 1-2pm.

My best tip for finding and sticking to a good daily routine is to 'buddy-up.' It's easier when your spouse, sibling, partner, etc. is there to provide any feedback, support or whatever is needed to make it a good daily routine! :)

I use cork boards quite a bit-one by the computer, one in each of our bedrooms and one in the kitchen...helps us keep track of events, impt papers etc.

We have a no computer rule for the a.m. If any one of us gets on the computer, time gets lost so fast. With our routine, everything gets done early and then if the kids/me/hubby want to go Online, we will. It works out well for keeping a schedule that works well for us.
