The Moment that Got Away

When you have kids, your video camera works overtime. Kids grow so quickly and change so often, we want to capture each and every precious moment. So we try to keep a video camera close by. But even when we plan our video coverage like it's a military campaign, those once-in-a-lifetime moments can still elude us.

Sometimes it's because we screwed up and ended up with unwatchable videos. We have videos that are too blurred, or too dark. We have videos that are so jumpy that watching them gives you motion sickness. We have videos shot in "portrait mode" (I took this one with our regular point-and-shoot camera, and turned the camera on its side, forgetting that I was shooting a video, not a photo). So we've got a cute video of Jammy, learning how to jump, but not quite understanding how to keep both feet in the air at the same time -- but you need to turn your head ninety degrees to watch it.

We even have videos of Moments that don't capture the Moment at all. In this one, we must have pressed the "Record" button without knowing it. Then, when things started happening and we zoomed in to capture The Moment, we pressed the "Record" button thinking we were turning it on.... not turning it off. Hence this lovely video of a basketball parquet floor.

But the most frustrating video Moments are the ones I never got to capture. For example, 3Po and Jammy learned to ride two-wheelers at the tender young age of three. They were the subject of many stares and impressed looks -- but I have no video footage of that era. Zero. Zip. Nada. Not the first time they ever balanced on two wheels (although, to be fair to myself, they learned after about five minutes of me running beside them, so there wasn't really time to run a grab a video camera) or even any shots of them once they got really good at it. And it's too late -- all the video footage of six year olds on a bike cannot compare to a video of two tiny three-year olds zipping around on two-wheelers.

Fortunately this is the era of lightweight, high quality video cameras like the Flip . I have two Flip cameras myself, so I've got one at home and one for the road. And if my kids decide to hop on a friend's unicycle or try a kick-flip on their scooter, I'll be ready.

Win a $200 Gift Card

We don't have a video camera at all so I have missed many many moments. I did borrow my dad's recently but he lost the USB cord so I can't download the video. My son is 5 & I have 1 lousy 10sec video taken with my camera when it snowed. I have been eyeing a Flip & would love to win one!

main entry: Well one of those missed moments for me were years ago during that era you speak of when we had the video camera that was unfortunately heavyweight like a ton of bricks on your shoulder & we lugged it inside Disney world for our first & only trip there every with my then 8yr old daughter hoping to capture her very speacial day and as we were thinking we were taping it and go to view it back on the screen see it blank only to find out no one had gotten that BIG BRICK BATTERY that has to be charged from the kitchen counter and put it back into the Monsterous video camera. So we lost any moments we would of wanted to show her as she grew up to pass on and still had to lug that old heavy obeject around the rest of the day which I either wanted to toss in the garbage can or rent a baby stroller just to carry it. We bought a disposable picture camera but clearly it was not the same as live enjoyment of that once in a lifetime moment to have and remember. I'd love to win this awesome giveaway so I can capture speacial moments of my 6yr old grandson as we spend time together for him to have someday so thanks for the chance Blogher & bonggafinds2

I never had a video camera when the first eight kids were growing up. I missed thier first concerts, their plays, their sports, their dance and just the moments that they were being kids. For me, I wish that I would have had a video so that they could see how cute they really were! I wish my daughter could see how well she really sang! I wish that they could have had footage that made them laugh at themselves. And most of all, I wish that I had a video camera then so that I could have remembered all the good things that I seem to have forgotten.

I wish I had a video camera during my second pregnancy and our move from hawaii to colorado (they were at the same time). Heck, I didn't even HAVE a point and shoot camera...just my measly little camera on my computer. It was terrible to not get our memories documented during our last few months in hawaii...or to be able to capture my growing belly. i would LOVE one of these! ;)

With a 2 week old and an 18 month old, I’m sure there are many fun snippets in my future. But I wish that I would have been able to whip out my video camera on Mother’s Day this year when the 18 month old was mimicking her Dad yelling into paper towel tube. He made a few generic grunts and howls and animal noises and then he gave me the best Mother’s day present ever by yelling “I love Mommy” into the tube so that my sweet, precious 18 month old girl yelled “Ah Ahhhhh Momma!!!” It was a loose interpretation, but I know what she meant.

Also, I have a horrible memory. I rely on pictures and videos to hold on to the past.

This past Friday my brother was staying the night at my sisters home that she shares with her fiance. Scott (my brother) last remembers falling asleep on the couch. At some point in the middle of the night, he began sleep walking and eventually found himself in my sister and her fiances bed - sleeping next to them. They all awoke at the same time when my sisters alarm went off at 6am and hilarity (and confusion) ensued. Man, I wish I could have seen that. Over, and over again. Haha... Thanks for the great giveaway!!

When my son and daughter were about 4 & 5 we lived in Virgina Beach and one day we went to the grocery store. There outside was the Oscar Meyer Weiner mobile taking auditions. My son got up there and sang his heart out but I didn't have anything with me to capture the moment.

I wish I had a video camera when my grandaughter was born, start crawling, took her first steps, said her first words and sang her first song. The are so many moments we remember but a video never fades or grows old and its something that can be shared with friends and family.

I wish I had a Flip when my best friend and I crossed the finish line after walking 60 miles at the Dallas Komen 3-Day in 2008. We were tired, injured, mentally exhausted, and in tears… but we walked across the finish line hand-in-hand into closing ceremonies. It was one of the biggest accomplishments of our lives and it would have been fantastic to have digital proof. Hopefully we can rectify that since we are doing it again in November.

My nephew recently had his 1st birthday party with cake and everything. He was sitting in his high chair eating cake with his fingers, with blue and red Spiderman icing coating everything. :) My dad leaned down to say Happy Birthday to him and my nephew was so delighted to see Grandpa he reached out and pulled him by the ears up close for a kiss. And smeared red and blue icing all over my dad in the process! It was priceless! My sister was taking pictures of course, but a video of that would have been a keeper. :)

There are many occasions that i wished i had one, but one time when my Grandson was 13 yrs old and stood about 5'7" he climbed into my dryer head first with his glasses on, turned around inside and came out head first with his glasses still on his face. it would have been great to have captured on video.
