The Moment that Got Away

When you have kids, your video camera works overtime. Kids grow so quickly and change so often, we want to capture each and every precious moment. So we try to keep a video camera close by. But even when we plan our video coverage like it's a military campaign, those once-in-a-lifetime moments can still elude us.

Sometimes it's because we screwed up and ended up with unwatchable videos. We have videos that are too blurred, or too dark. We have videos that are so jumpy that watching them gives you motion sickness. We have videos shot in "portrait mode" (I took this one with our regular point-and-shoot camera, and turned the camera on its side, forgetting that I was shooting a video, not a photo). So we've got a cute video of Jammy, learning how to jump, but not quite understanding how to keep both feet in the air at the same time -- but you need to turn your head ninety degrees to watch it.

We even have videos of Moments that don't capture the Moment at all. In this one, we must have pressed the "Record" button without knowing it. Then, when things started happening and we zoomed in to capture The Moment, we pressed the "Record" button thinking we were turning it on.... not turning it off. Hence this lovely video of a basketball parquet floor.

But the most frustrating video Moments are the ones I never got to capture. For example, 3Po and Jammy learned to ride two-wheelers at the tender young age of three. They were the subject of many stares and impressed looks -- but I have no video footage of that era. Zero. Zip. Nada. Not the first time they ever balanced on two wheels (although, to be fair to myself, they learned after about five minutes of me running beside them, so there wasn't really time to run a grab a video camera) or even any shots of them once they got really good at it. And it's too late -- all the video footage of six year olds on a bike cannot compare to a video of two tiny three-year olds zipping around on two-wheelers.

Fortunately this is the era of lightweight, high quality video cameras like the Flip . I have two Flip cameras myself, so I've got one at home and one for the road. And if my kids decide to hop on a friend's unicycle or try a kick-flip on their scooter, I'll be ready.

Win a $200 Gift Card

Actually we had a video camera after my daughter was born. She was in the NICU and the camera just seemed so big and it was so tiring bringing it to the hospital each day. We just kept saying that we would have plenty of time to take videos after she got out. She passed away and we only have about 5 minutes of video for 6 weeks. My heart hurt so much when I realized what had happened. Those are moments that I can never get back. I have been able to make a beautiful slide show with the few minutes inserted into it which has helped me, but boy a little camera that could fit into my pocket would have been awesome.

a moment that I wished I had a video camera was when my daughter was married 2 weeks ago!! I only have some pictures that someone else took! They had a shaky hand too! Granted I was crying ,but they were tears of happiness and the flip would have been perfect! I wish I had a video because my baby is married!!
Thanks

I saw a squirrel run up to a kid on a bench and grab a cracker. Would have been great on video :)

It may sound cliche, but I really wish I had a good video of my wedding. We did our wedding on the cheap (even grew our own flowers!) and did not have the money to have it taped. A relative took video of the whole thing, but its jumpy and fades in and out and is just really horrible. She even missed me coming down the isle. Seeing as how I was SO nervous, I barely remember anything of my wedding and have always regretted not having a professional or at least BETTER recording of my wedding day.

I have nine cats…yep nine, and they all live inside with my wife and I. They keep us in stitches laughing sometimes. It would be awesome to have a video camera to catch them in the act of doing funny things. An example would be when Meeko was trying to get his big head in a tiny bag to get to something in the bottom (food of course) and he got the bag stuck on his head and sat up and the bag came up with him. He just sat there very proper, tail wrapped around his feet in front, with the bag straight up on top his head! Priceless!

My son (who is 13) has a really strong gag reflex and recently had to have a strep test. I wish I had a video camera in the room when we waited for the nurse.

She walked in with the swab in her hand. When she opened the door, he began gagging. She had not even stepped into the room yet.

He continued until she was done swabbing his throat. She could barely do it because she was laughing so hard.

I know this isn't a sweet moment to want to capture, but I really do regret not having a video camera just for the humor in it. Poor kid.

I follow you on twitter. My name is JEnsTXTweets. Thanks.

I would have loved to have a video camera the last time I visited my grandmother in Costa Rica. She would tell us old family stories and it would have been great to have that on film. She died shortly thereafter so I lost my chance.

There are so many but a funny one was when I told my 70 lb. dog Daisy to "load up" in my truck which normally meant her jumping in the back but this time for some reason, she jumped right through the window onto my lap! I guess she thought she was driving that day?? lol!

I would have loved to have a video camera to lend to my parents to use at my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary. Those don’t happen very often these days, and I would have liked to have the memories recorded.

Our newest puppy had a fixation on rocks and used to bring one inside the house whenever I let her back in from going to the bathroom. I used to stand at the door like a dragnet to corner her and rip it out of her mouth before she came inside. Of course, hubby was not so vigilant and let her in one day and I could tell she had something in her mouth. Hubby went to grab her and ended up chasing her all over the house, cornered her, reached in and pulled out a....poopsicle (frozen dog poop). I wish I had a camera to capture the look on his face when he realized what he had in his bare hand.
