This is a sponsored post from BlogHer and McDonald's.
When some of my friends found out that I had been invited by McDonald's to visit their campus in Illinois, there were a few raised eyebrows and questions. You're going? Are you going to be eating hamburgers and fries for three days? Can you ask them to add carrots and grapes to the kids' Happy Meals? What do they put in those McDonald's fries?? Given the obesity epidemic in the US, it's no surprise that McDonald's is constantly under fire for nutritional content and marketing to kids, and I've often wondered what they put in those fries myself -- but I've never thought of McDonald's as one of those "evil corporations". McDonald's is quite a popular restaurant in the Philippines, where eating at a McDonald's is still considered a treat by many. And whenever we vacation in the UK, we frequently eat at McDonald's -- and find ourselves pleasantly surprised by the delicious, healthy options we've found on the UK menu. So I resolved to keep an open mind and enter the McDonald's Family Time Getaway ready and willing to learn. I was eager to attend because I would have a chance like no other to give my opinions, offer feedback, ask questions, and find out what goes on behind the Golden Arches.
I'm so glad we attended, and so grateful to McDonald's for opening up their doors to me, my family, and the other bloggers. We enjoyed three full days of presentations, tours and activities, including a scavenger hunt, a family barbecue, a session with the president of McDonald's USA, a visit to a Ronald McDonald House, a cooking session and a tasting of some of their newest products. And I learned lots of things about McDonald's business practices and culture that have left me with a much more positive impression of McDonald's as a corporation, Here are five things that I learned about McDonald's during our busy, entertaining, eye-opening weekend:
5) You can customize your McDonald's hamburger practically any way you want. The kids and I got to stand behind the counter during our behind-the-scenes restaurant tour, and building a custom burger is as easy as putting your finger to the touchscreen. No pickles? No problem. Two slices of cheese? Easy-peasy. Extra lettuce and no onions? Coming right up. Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun? They have exactly the burger you want....
4) The only Happy Meal that appears on ads is the one that meets US nutritional guidelines for kids: a Happy Meal with 4-pc Chicken McNuggets, Apple Dippers and lowfat white milk. Also, Ronald McDonald never directly markets Happy Meals to kids. He appears in McDonald's ads promoting healthy and fun lifestyles, and he has also appeared in a number of public campaigns including seat belt safety and bicycle helmet safety. Oh, in case you were wondering: there's only ONE Ronald McDonald. When we asked the staff if the same guy was playing Ronald for the whole weekend, we were told, "He IS Ronald!". I guess he's like Santa Claus, and he can be in thousands of restaurants worldwide.
3) McDonald's restaurants around the world have a variety of healthy options for kids' meals. For example, kids in the UK can get carrots or grapes and apples with their Happy Meals. Kids in Spain can have cherry tomatoes. Kids in Japan can have sweetcorn. And if US-based parents complain about the lack of healthy options in US Happy Meals, perhaps we'd better take a closer look at ourselves: McDonald's has test-marketed healthy Happy Meal side dishes like the ones I mentioned, but not enough parents bought them for their kids to make it economically viable to introduce nationwide. In short, McDonald's tried, but the healthy stuff didn't sell.
2) There's nothing in Chicken McNuggets other than an injection of teriyaki flavor solution, breadcrumbs and white meat. That's it. No breadcrumbs or other fillers. And no hormones either; the use of hormones to grow chickens quicker has been banned for quite a while, and McDonald's chicken suppliers do not use it.
1) The French fries are just that. No preservatives, no chemicals, no fillers. They are real potatoes that have been cut into strips, partially fried, flash frozen, and delivered to your local McDonald's. Once they're at a restaurant, a crew member puts them in the deep fryer, takes them out when they're done, and salts them. So when anyone asks you, "What do they put in those McDonald's fries???", you can tell them, "Just potatoes. I have it on highest authority -- Bonggamom told me".
This summer, we're vacationing in the UK for a month. Guess which fast-food restaurant we'll be visiting while we're there? That's right, the one with the carrots, grapes and apples!

I had a McDonalds birthday party when I was 6. It was a lot of fun! Do they still do those?

I loved when I was young and small enough to race my siblings through the play structures.
When I was a teenager we would go to McDonalds all the time - we lived in a small town and McDonald's was a BIG DEAL! I remember having the same meal every time: cheeseburger and small fries. Still love it!
Going to McDonalds in India was a hoot!
I loved McD's as a kid. I stopped going as an adult b/c of the health factor, but it';s good to know they have worked on it!
I have fond memories of my early birthday parties being in McDonald Land with the giant Ronald table for the brithday kid to sit at.
took our grandkids to McDonald's in Gulf Shores on Kuzins Kamp and one got stuck (actually scared) at the top of the play ground equipment and we (adult) had to go in after her! boy did we feel goofy! Thanks! Teri Dingler @ tdingler@bellsouth.net
My kids (6 and 4) love McDonald's, so we eat there pretty frequently. When we first started going about 3 years ago and I ordered apples instead of french fries in the happy meal, the cashier looked at me like I was from another planet. He called the manager and said, "Do we have apples?" Apparently they aren't a big hit here in my small town. Now, they know us so well that they have the order practically finished before I can get the money out. (By the way, I hopped over here from "The Planet of Janet.")
Sad but true, the only protein my Aspie son would eat for about a year was McDonalds cheeseburgers- Plain Double Cheeseburgers to be exact! Luckly we are past that now, but a McDonalds Happy meal will still bring a smile on a "pouty" day!!
are you seriously arguing for the merits of mc donald's food?
this is the dumbest blog post ever. you are feeding your kids poison & i bet you have a fat ass.
I order apple dippers instead of hash brown when I order my burrito breakfast combo! Have had plenty of weird looks but they always do it! You can also get apple dippers instead of fries with any other combo meal. Makes my breakfast a "happy meal"! And my dd thinks it is funny that we both get apples! thank you!

My kindergarten class went to McDonald's on a field trip. Not for lunch: McDonald's was the whole trip!
I loved playing on the playground when I was little. It was a great time to eat and then get to go play.
I love McDonald's. I remember when they first opened in my town, I was about 7 years old. It was such a big deal to get a happy meal. We didn't eat out much then but I can remember it vividly.
Our restaurant has undergone several remodels but now I take my girls and we've had several b-day parties there as well.
Nothing like Mc'd's!

My youngest son always wanted to go to "Old" McDonalds!

Oh, how fun! I have plenty of McDonalds memories and most include hanging out with friends and family with a smile. My very-picky-eater son's first McNugget ended up opening up his eyes to chicken in other forms - hallelujah!

I loved McDonalds as a kid it was rare that we got to go and always made me and my sisters smile
I always say... a McDonalds Caramel frappe a day... keeps the doctor away... lol
My Middling son loved Ronald McDonald when he was 2. He put him right up there with Buzz Lightyear and Tomas the Tank. He had a couple McDonalds playsets (one from my childhood and a new one) that he played with daily.
For his third birthday, we hosted his party at McDonalds with a play place... not my first choice as a mom... but it made him so happy and it became one of our fondest memories.
Great article. It is nice to hear from the other side... America needs more balance and healthy choices... not big bullies to tell us where and what we can or cannot eat.
My favorite McDonalds memory is when I arrived in Sydney, Aus the first time and saw the different (healthy!) selections they had and the price difference between ours and theirs. It was really interesting.

When I was a kid, every birthday party I had and every birthday party I went to was at McDonald's. The McDonald's that we went to had a massive outdoor playground and we'd have so much fun playing on all the park equipment, which were giant sized statues of Ronald McDonald, Hamburglar, Grimace, etc.
The best part was the McDonald birthday cake and loot bags! What ever happened to McDonald birthday cakes? Do they still make them??
Those were some of the best memories for me growing up. Fun, family, friends, and an afternoon playing in the McDonald playground.

We always stop at McDonald's when we are driving across country on vacations, so I have many fond memories of late evenin McD stops and can see those particular places in my head when I think back to our travels. French fries and burgers can do that. Oh, and pancakes in the morning!
I miss the play days at McDonald's can't wait till I have some grandkids to take and play with!!
thanks McDonald land
happy meals are a LIFE-SAVER for a road trip with quadruplet 3 yr olds!!!! love mickey D's!

My dad would take me to McDonald's while my mom would take my sisters to Taco Bell across the street. It was a fun time for the two of us!
Well, I love taking my daughter there and seeing how happy it makes here, but a memory from my own childhood involves the first time I had a Big Mac. They were doing a promotion to get a Coca-cola glass with the Big Mac and I really wanted one, so my Mom told me I would have to eat the Big Mac then, she wasn't ordering me something else too. And I've loved it ever since!

During October at Mcd's instead of the regular happy meal box, the kids got their happy meal in a plastic pumpkin. The kids, now 27 and 30 still remeber this too. This is my favorite memory.

When I asked my daughter what she wanted for her third birthday, she said that she wanted a McDonalds. Well, I thought that she meant that she wanted to have a birthday party at the local McDonalds. She corrected me and said that she wanted a McDonalds of her own - not just a party there. She did grow up to be a fantastic business woman.
Thank you,

Right now-I endure the screaming of the indoor playplaces-I figure my daughter is working off the calories in the crack-fries (sorry-I'm not sure i believe you on what's in the fries-they're TOO good). And it's not so bad-I just sit with a book and the best diet coke in the world. Did you ask them why their diet coke tastes better than other places? Is there crack in the soda too? ;)
they use to have a McDonalds at our Walmart, they had a big huge sitting McDonalds in the front inside the store, my daughter was little she would love to go and sit on his lap just to visit then have some chicken nuggets and fries. When she grew older when she was having a bad day, we would tell her she needed to visit with Ronald and tell him all about it.
Oh man, I remember chasing down the teeny beanie babies. The local McDonald's had trade nights to swap out beanie babies with other collectors.
we always have my nephews birthday partys at mcdonalds and it hard to get them to leave playland for the party but they love having thier partys there.
I always have fond memories of visiting the 2story one in Miami. My dad and I had our special time there and I always looked forward to that.
boy I loved having the kids parties years ago at mcds////our local ones do not have playlands so not really fun but they love and beg for french fries when sick
My daughter and her cousins went last winter and my nephew got stuck in the playland trying to climb to the top. He panicked and would not go up or down and his stepmom had to climb in and get him.
when i'm trying to kill time with the boys and weather permits, i'll take them over to the mcdonald's play place while i sip some coffee
Every mom remembers the first time their little one had McDonald's french fries.
I know I do.
When I was growing up, we lived in a rural area and rarely ate out. I remember going shopping with my mom a few times a year and having lunch at McDonald's. It was always a treat.

One of my favorite McDonalds moments is when I pick up one of their new coffee drinks at the drive thru. It is so convenient not to have to get out and go in a store and wait in line, so much more affordable, and easier with my kids in the backseat!

My daughter and I always share the apples and I forgo the french fries to make it a little healthier. I have a friend who is convinced that McDonald's soaks their fries in sugar water prior to frying and that's why they're so good.

I remember getting a Happy Meal when I was younger. When Happy Meals first came out, there was a very small package of cookies in it. On the package was a riddle. McDonalds used to have plastic hand puppets- do they still have them? I still have one of the hand puppets and package wrappers from the cookies in a scrapbook I made A LONG TIME AGO!
my best mc d moment was after weeks of trying to get my lil guy to eat adult food (he wasn't a big baby food eater either)he finally decided to try adult food at mc donalds...his first bite was a french fry and we haven't been able to stop him since..they are his FAVORITE

The youngs one loves the pickles off the hamburgers.
My favorite McDonalds past time moment was when a long time ago I remember us all getting crabby and the next thing you knew we were having a food fight. We turned a not so happy moment into a happy one. It only happened once so it was definantly memorable! gmissycat@yahoo.com

I can remember the expansive mcdonalds with the multiple pieces of playground equipment (anyone remember the hamburglar jail tree lol?) I also remember the old 50's mcdonalds in chicago where there is a car you can sit in. Always thought that was awesome. Now I take my kids to the playland and I hope I am giving them as many memories as my mom and dad gave me. BTW biggest MCDs is in orlando florida. Kids loved it. It was like a giant arcade
Spent my honeymoon in Cancun, Mexico. After a week of "mexican" food, I was SO happy to discover a McDonald's in a local mall!
