The Breakfast Routine

This is sponsored content by BlogHer and Kelloggs.

Growing up, I never ate breakfast. You'd think that the daughter of a doctor would have known better than to skip the most important meal of the day, but my dad always got up later than we did, and I don't think he ever knew that his kids were sleeping in until the last minute and rushing into the car to get to school. Or maybe my parents just figured that if I ate a snack during our school's 10AM recess break, we'd be okay.

Now I'm a parent of three school-aged children, and our morning routine couldn't be more different. Okay, maybe it's not that different. My kids also sleep in until the last minute and rush to get ready. But we do sit at our kitchen table to have breakfast every single day. The benefits to mind and body of eating a good breakfast each morning can't be ignored! I had to make a real effort to cultivate the breakfast habit in myself, but now I'm just like Alfie and the kids -- I need that morning fuel to jump start my day.

It's usually cereal and milk for the kids, but on those rare occasions that pancakes appear on 3Po's breakfast plate, he sure cleans it up!

Exactly what that fuel is varies from day to day -- for me, at least. The kids and Alfie start each day like clockwork; almost every single day they have a bowl of cereal and milk, some fruit and a glass of juice or water. I, on the other hand, crave more variety. Sometimes I have fruit and yogurt. Sometimes I crave a bowl of oatmeal. Sometimes I'll munch on toast with scrambled eggs. Sometimes I'll treat myself to a croissant, or a waffle smeared with cream cheese and honey. There are even times when I have last night's leftovers! On those days Alfie can barely look at my breakfast plate, but as I keep reminding him, different cultures have different morning eating habits:

* Filipinos like chorizo and rice
* The Japanese like miso soup and fish
* Cubans like beans and rice
* Bavarian cultures like sausage, pretzels..... and beer!

It's not much different from a traditional English breakfast of bacon, eggs and tomato, is it? I figure, as long as it's healthy, it doesn't really matter what you eat for breakfast, as long as you do eat breakfast.

Does anyone want to join me this morning for some leftover pea soup?

Whatever your morning fuel is, don't forget to have some Bonggamom Finds with your breakfast! I'm partnering with BlogHer and Kellogg's to bring you some fun breakfast topics, from morning routines to cereal to family breakfast traditions and more. The kids prefer cold cereal, but my 5 year old will sometimes pick cold leftover pizza for breakfast if we had pizza the night before!

I have coffee and a little something sweet when I first wake up. Maybe a danish, or even a cookie or brownie. I'm not a morning person and I need to bribe myself with a treat to get out of bed, LOL! Then I check my emails and have a sensible breakfast a little later, like cereal or a banana and orange juice. Then I shower and get ready for work.

Most of the time it's cereal or waffles for me... but I do love pancakes and my husband makes a mean potato hash!

We eat lots and lots of cereal and sometimes oatmeal!

I prefer cereal for myself in the mornings; my grandkids all have different preferences for breakfast…one has a scrambled egg plus fruit; I keep pancakes frozen in the refrigerator; and all of them like my oven cinnamon toast. But I don’t have the responsibility of getting them off to school each day etc and all but the two youngest can get their own breakfasts and they have siblings who can make breakfast for them.

I'm the only one at my house that eats breakfast- unless you count the 2 dogs with their Dog Chow and the rabbit with his carrot! I normally end up eating a banana and some instant oatmeal at work. On the weekends I like Kellogg's Frosted Flakes with my banana!

Weekday breakfast is usually cold cereal and orange juice. Saturdays I'll make pancakes, french toast, or eggs. Sundays I like to make cinnamon rolls out of tube biscuits.

During the week we have eggs, oatmeal, cream of wheat, or cold cereal. For weekends, we love to have pancakes or french toast.

Everyone is up and about at different times so we all have our own routines. Mine involves feeding all the animals as I’m first up and then relaxing with coffee. I don’t eat until I get to work and usually then have a bagel with cream cheese. No milk available at the office cafeteria so no cereal.

If I don't make everyone eat, they wouldn't eat anything. But mornings are rushed, so people mostly grab toast or bagel (and coffee for me) and it's off we go!

Thanks for the giveaway. In the morning I eat a bowl of cereal with milk + add frozen fruit, or in the summer I add strawberries and raspberries from the back yard.

Up, shower, get kids up and feed all - cereal, frozen pancakes (homemade), waffles, scones and I usually try to get some fruit in my kids although I'm not always successful! Coffee for me! Take care of pets, dress and off to school.

Our typical morning routine is that I wake up first with the baby and make her and me oatmeal. THen our two older daughters wake up and make themselves Eggos and later my son and husband wake up last and have bowls of cereal. We never eat breakfast together but we always eat dinner as a family.

My son’s typical breatfast is yogurt, fruit and a poptart, or McDonald’s. My morning breakast is 2 sausage and egg burritos from McDonald’s every morning, and about 4-5 cups of coffee :)

On the weekends, if he’s home I may make breakfast (pancakes or omlettes) or we’ll go out for brunch @ Cracker Barrel :)

I need to get a morning routine! I always say that I am going to make myself breakfast in the morning, but I usually don’t feel hungry by the time I leave my house. But that is a big mistake because I start feeling hungry on my one hour drive to work so I end up stopping at a fast food place for some greasy foods that my body really doesn’t need. I need to be more prepared and pack a healthy breakfast that I can eat in the car on my way to work.
