Pop-Tarts Oatmeal: a Winning Recipe

This is a compensated review by BlogHer and Kellogg’s® Pop-Tarts® Toaster Pastries.

Read more to find out how you could win a $100 Visa gift card!

Last week I rhapsodized about the pleasures of Pop-Tarts served cold, and even tried out a Sprinkly Ice Cream Bites recipe with the new Frosted Strawberry Milkshake flavor. Now, I realize there are some die-hard warmed-up Pop-Tarts fans (my husband included) who might be feeling left out, so in the interest of reconciliation (hey, we all love Pop-Tarts, don't we?) I'm sharing my very own Pop-Tarts recipe -- and it's a hot dish.

Bonggamom's Pop-Tarts Oatmeal
1/2 cup Irish steel-cut oatmeal
2 cups water
1 Kelloggs Frosted Strawberry Milkshake Pop-Tart

Boil 2 cups water. When the water is boiling briskly, stir in the oatmeal. When the porridge is smooth and beginning to thicken, turn down the heat and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Crumble up the Pop-Tart and stir it into the oatmeal in the last 3 minutes of cooking. Serve immediately.

If you're more of a time-saving, shortcut-loving kind of gal (and who isn't on weekdays?), you can use this recipe instead:

1/2 cup quick-cooking rolled oats (I prefer the Irish kind)
1 cup water
1 Kelloggs Frosted Strawberry Milkshake Pop-Tart

Mix the oats and water together in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave on High for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes or until thickened. Crumble up the Pop-Tart and stir it into the oatmeal, then microwave on High for 10 seconds more. Stir and serve immediately.

Serves two hungry kids or one greedy grownup.

The resulting dish is ooey, gooey, pink and pretty, warm and fuzzy. You can add milk and maple syrup to suit your own taste, but honestly, I think the Frosted Strawberry Milkshake Pop-Tarts already adds just the right hint of milkiness and sweetness and crunch.

As for how it tastes, I think the photos say it all:
In fact, I'd be right along with them, trying to get my share of that oatmeal, but I had to take the photo. Don't worry, I got the last laugh: I made a whole new bowl of Pop-Tarts oatmeal all for myself.

Win It!
Remember that $100 Visa gift card that I put up for grabs on my previous Pop-Tart post? Want more chances to win? No problem -- all you have to do is leave another comment on this post and tell me what your kids love to eat for breakfast.

The kids are easy to please. Our typical routine is to lay out all the cereal, oatmeal, fruit, and juice on the counter to let everyone pretty much fend for themselves before we sit down to eat breakfast together. On weekends we may indulge a little and have stuffed french toast or pancakes, two other favorites. If we’re in a big rush, we’ll usually make fruit, yogurt, and granola parfaits to go. Thanks!
