Taking the Wonder Bread Challenge: Review and Giveaway

This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Wonder®.
Alfie was raised on soft, white English sandwich bread, and Wonder® bread is one of the few brands that passes his rigid (no, actually soft) standards, so we're already big Wonder® bread fans (our favorite is Wonder® Whole Grain White Bread). But when we were invited to review their bread, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that even Wonder® Classic White Bread has lots of vitamins and minerals, and as much calcium in 2 slices as a glass of milk! The Basics We were sent a loaf of Wonder® Classic White calcium-enriched fortified bread to try out. Oh, you know Wonder® bread. That soft, squishy bread. That bread that goes perfectly above and underneath ham, turkey, peanut butter, jelly, butter, cheese, and everything else that makes a sandwich a sandwich. Here's what Wonder® bread has to say: Wonder® bread was one of the first white breads to be fortified with eight essential vitamins and minerals. Wonder® Classic White Bread and Wonder® Classic White Sandwich Bread... - Have as much calcium as an eight ounce glass of milk in just two slices. - Of course, there’s no trans fat in either bread. - And, they have the same great taste and soft texture you’d expect from Wonder®. Along with the bread, we were also sent a can of spinach and a can of beans. We were invited to participate in a taste test -- which of these three calcium-rich foods would my kids prefer? Finally, we were sent a cute little Flip camera to film the results. What fun! Once again, here are the contenders: Item A: Spinach. But not just any old spinach. I didn't want to steer the kids towards the bread by serving up a can of cold, shriveled spinach, so I sauteed it in olive oil, along with onions and mushrooms. Item B: A slice of Wonder® bread, spread with butter. Item C: Beans. Again, I tried to make the beans as appealing as possible by lacing them with butter and brown sugar and a bit of bacon. My kids adore baked beans, so I suspected this one might give the bread a run for its money. The Bongga Here are the results of our Wonder® bread challenge. I swear to you, these results weren't doctored in any way; the kids didn't know which product I was reviewing, and they didn't know I would be filming them until they sat down to eat. And may my 90-year-old grandmother lose her next mah-jongg game if I'm lying. All three kids picked the Wonder® bread! Jammy was the most undecided -- I told you my baked beans were fabulous -- but in the end he picked the Wonder® bread as well. Not that I'm shocked or anything. The bread is soft and yummy, and I'm thrilled it has so much calcium in it, so they're not missing out on that nutrient by shunning the beans and spinach. Eat your bread! It's so much easier -- and more productive -- than saying Eat your beans! or Eat your spinach!. As for Alfie, with each bite of bread, he slipped further into his childhood memories, and as I filmed him clutching the bag of bread, I swear I could hear his deliberately-cultivated BBC accent degenerate into the Wiltshire accent of his boyhood. The Blah The only problem with this bread is that it's white bread, so it doesn't have much fiber. Which is why the usual loaf of bread in our household is Wonder® Whole Grain White Bread. It's as soft and yummy as the regular Wonder® white bread (at least we think so), but it has 4 grams of fiber per serving -- plus a bunch of vitamins and minerals, including all that calcium-enriched goodness! No compromises necessary! The Bottom Line Wonder® bread is a nutritious source of vitamins and minerals, including calcium -- as much as -- so you don't need an excuse to indulge in a classic PBJ or hot, buttered toast! Win it! One lucky Bonggamom Finds reader will be selected to win a $100 Visa gift card and a year's supply of WonderBread!! That's 52 coupons for one free loaf of Wonder® Classic White or Wonder® Classic White Sandwich bread and $100 to buy the sandwich fixings, or whatever else you want!
